COURSE DESCRIPTION: General Biology 1114 is a course that emphasizes those topics that are considered essential for a general knowledge in the biological sciences. Some of the topics that will be covered during the semester include basic chemistry, cell structure and function, the cell membrane, cell division, metabolism, genetics, human body systems, plant and animal kingdoms, protozoans and fungi, and ecology. This course meets the four-credit hour general education life science requirement for the Associate or Bachelor's degree.

COURSE STRUCTURE: This course will reflect the traditional method of instruction including lecture, demonstration, and discussion. Videos, overheads, and other instructional materials will be utilized to support the lecture topics. Labs will include a variety of activities to provide further opportunity to study and experience the principles and concepts presented in lecture and covered in the text. It is expected that extensive classroom notes will be taken throughout the semester, and that laboratory activities will be documented in lab reports. You are encouraged to make comments and/or ask questions at any time. For this course to be successful, your weekly participation is required. More than two weeks absence will lower your grade unless previous arrangements have been made with your instructor. Exams, labs, and field trips will not be able to be made up.
PLAGIARISM STATEMENT: Plagiarism is representing someone else's ideas or work as your own. To avoid plagiarism when using someone else's data, arguments, designs, words, ideas, projects, etc., you must make it clear that the work originated with someone else by citing the source. A student found guilty of plagiarism will receive a zero for that particular assignment. A student found guilty of cheating on a quiz, exam, paper, or project, will receive a zero for that particular assignment. If there are two or more identical papers that are impossible to determine who actually conducted the work, and who plagiarized, then all students will receive a zero for the particular assignment.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT: Students are expected to follow university policies as put forth in the institution's Student Code of Responsibilities and Conduct. In accordance with Title 12 of The Student Code (p.11), instances of alleged academic misconduct will follow the policies and procedures as described in Title 12. As a general rule, faculty at Rogers State University have the responsibility of enforcing the academic code. Therefore, if academic misconduct is suspected I will submit a letter of alleged academic misconduct to the Office of Student Affairs.
