Figuring your grade

Below you will find a generic way to figure your "grade to date" or your current grade in the class. This method will work for any class but the sample values and graded items are taken from the Science Proficiency class. Not all classes have the same components, but this method will allow you to calculate with a reasonable degree of accuracy your current grade.

There are two basic components to any grade that you receive. The number of points that you earned (Your Grade) and the number of points possible (Points Possible).

  Your Grade Points Possible
Exams 81 100
  78 100
  86 100

Quizzes 9 10
  8 10
  7 10
6 10
9 10

Assignments 9 10
  10 10
9 10
8 10
7 10
Total 327 400

Now that you have all of your grades tallied and the points possible tallied, divide your grade (327) by the total points possible (400). (To turn any number into a percentage, multiply by 100  -OR-  move the decimal point two spaces to the right.)

327
400

=

0.8175

=

81.75% or 82%

The grading scale for all of my classes is:

  90 - 100% = A
  80 - 89% = B
  70 - 79% = C
  60 - 69% = D
   0 - 59% = F

Currently, my sample student has a "B". Keep in mind that the fewer grades you have to work with, the more the final grade can differ from your "grade to date".
